Bruce Springsteen, New Year's Eve
Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ 1977-->1978

This was another incredible night - the First Annual Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes New Year's Eve Show at the Capitol. I wanted to work, but not too hard, so we got some 2nd row tickets on the center aisle - a rare House Photographer privilege.

The show was being broadcast by WNEW-FM. (Shifts into present tense) After a great Jukes show, the place empties, but we hang around......on a feeling, I guess (not really - it wasn't even near midnight yet..........SOMETHING had to happen).

After a LONG time and with the house half-empty, the Jukes come back on! And there's Bruce! And he appears to be a little TOO happy! Hey - it IS New Year's Eve, after all.

WNEW continues broadcasting. Those who had left and were driving home with the radio on WNEW make sudden U-turns in the middle of traffic. The Capitol begins filling up again, the crowd more raucous than before.

It's also obvious that something weird is going on in the wings. It turns out that WNEW didn't have permission to broadcast Bruce - just the Jukes. The station, of course, doesn't want to give up this gift that was just dumped in their laps and wants the ref to allow them a continuation play. So they argue for a while, which buys them some time to air a few more songs.

They eventually stopped the broadcast, though I don't know at what point. I think I have a really bad tape of it somewhere.

Avery Fisher Hall, NYC 1978

This was taken at the WNEW-FM Christmas Concert (I was shooting for the station) in the lobby where a tree was set up for Christmas present donations from the fans for disadvantaged children. As I was working, my then-girlfriend Sue Axamethy took this picture.

Where's all that hair when I need it?

Hofstra University Stadium, Hempstead, NY 1980

Billy led the Long Island-based WLIR-FM Heavy Hitters team against the Meat Loaf-led WNEW-FM All Stars team from NYC in the first annual Charity Begins At Home benefit softball game. Meat pitched for NEW and Billy DH'd for LIR.

If you look closely, these two captains look a little TOO friendly.

Vin Scelsa (WNEW-FM) and Old Relyable
Backstage - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ 1980

This was at a Todd Rundgren and Utopia Halloween show. My then-girlfriend, Sue Axamethy, came in second in the costume contest only because the winners wore some cheap wizard costumes and the pro-Todd crowd cheered loudly because of the 'Wizard/True Star'/Todd connection.

Sour grapes? You bet!

Consolation: later that night, Sue became the only person in the history of the planet to wind up on 2 stages in different states on the same night dressed as a Rely Tampon, when Blotto brought her onstage in NYC during their Halloween show.
